Standard, REAL ID, or Enhanced ID?

Not sure which one you need? Here’s the simple difference.

Standard Driver’s License

Best for everyday driving and identification.

  • Drive legally in the United States
  • Standard state-issued identification
  • Lower document requirements
  • Not accepted for domestic air travel after federal REAL ID enforcement.
Most Popular

REAL ID

Best if you fly domestically or need access to certain federal facilities.

  • Domestic air travel
  • Access to federal buildings and facilities
  • Minnesota driver’s license or ID
  • Requires additional identity and residency documents.
Canada Travel

Enhanced Driver’s License / ID

Best if you frequently cross the Canadian border by land or sea.

  • Everything included with REAL ID
  • Land and sea border crossing to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and Caribbean countries
  • Accepted for domestic flights
  • Cannot be used for international air travel.
  • Additional citizenship documentation required.

Customers may pre-apply online before visiting our office, or apply in person at Falls License Bureau. We can help you choose the right credential when you come in.

What to bring

Bring originals or certified documents. Photocopies, scans, and pictures on your phone are not accepted. Documents with holes punched through them or laminated documents can’t be accepted either.

Standard license

What to bring

  • Photo ID (current license, passport, or birth certificate).
  • Proof of MN address (utility bill, lease, or bank statement with address).
  • Payment.

REAL ID requirements

To apply for a Minnesota REAL ID, you must bring original or certified documents. Photocopies, scans, and pictures on your phone are not accepted.

Bring

  • 1 proof of identity and date of birth

Examples: certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, passport card, permanent resident card, or certificate of naturalization.

  • Your full Social Security number

You must know your full number. Additional documents may be needed if it cannot be verified.

  • 2 proofs of Minnesota residency

These must show your name and current physical Minnesota address. No P.O. boxes. If your address is correct and your driver's license is still current, you can use that for one proof. Other forms of proof can be a bank statement or utility issued within the past 90 days. They must list your name and home address.

  • Name change documents, if applicable

If your current name is different from your birth certificate or identity document, bring certified marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court orders showing each name change.

Best advice: Bring more documents than you think you need. REAL ID applications are document-sensitive, and missing one item can require a second trip.

Enhanced Driver’s License / Enhanced ID requirements

To apply for a Minnesota Enhanced Driver’s License or Enhanced ID, you must bring original or certified documents. Photocopies, scans, and pictures on your phone are not accepted.

Bring

  • Proof of identity and date of birth

Examples: certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, passport card, or certificate of naturalization.

  • Proof of full Social Security number

Examples: Social Security card, W-2, SSA-1099, non-SSA-1099, or pay stub showing your full Social Security number.

Best advice:Plan for about half an hour. There is an additional questionnaire to complete at the time of application. Bring more documents than you think you need — Enhanced applications require more documentation than a standard license, and missing one item can require a second trip.

Renewals

In-person renewals

Most renewals can be done in about ten minutes if you have your current license and payment.

What to bring

  • Current license.
  • Payment (cash, check, or card).
  • New address if it changed since your last renewal.

Commercial driver’s license

  • Class B single heavy vehicle over 26,001 lbs.
  • Class C vehicles carrying hazardous materials or 16 or more passengers.

Self-certify your medical status at your first CDL application or renewal. Medical certificates must be current to keep your CDL valid.
